Every day we saw the outdoors world in all its splendour, and every day that see worked as a pointer that we had wasted and destroyed our lives. Jim Quillen, AZ586 – a runaway, issue child and petty thief – was jailed a number of times prior to his twentieth birthday. In August 1942, after leaving from San Quentin, he was jailed on the run and sentenced to forty-five years in jail, and later moved to Alcatraz. This is the real story of life inside America’s most well-known jail – from frightening times in solitary confinement to day-to-day encounters with ‘the Birdman’, and what truly happened throughout the desperate and lethal 1946 escape attempt.
