A deep-sea diver, a dancer, an activist, a pilot, a singer, and a soldier– Great Ladies in Michigan History highlights a few of the girls from Michigan’s past who did remarkable things prior to they turned twenty years of ages. Author Patricia Majher provides easy-to-read mini-biographies of twenty women with ties to Michigan, representing a range of individual backgrounds and interests, locations throughout the state, and historic time periods. Majher introduces little-known stories, like those of female aviator Nancy Harkness (Love), pioneer Anna Howard Shaw, left slave Dorothy Butler, expert baseball player Marilyn Jenkins, union leader Myra Komaroff (Wolfgang), and Native American author Jane Johnston (Schoolcraft). She also consists of figures that numerous readers will acknowledge– consisting of First Lady Betty Bloomer (Ford), jockey Julie Krone, Motown star Diana Ross, and tennis champ Serena Williams. Majher shows that while life wasn’t constantly simple for these women, they were able to get rid of any variety of challenges to attain their goals. Terrific Girls in Michigan History includes a short section on each lady’s life after the age of twenty and a glossary of picked vocabulary words at the end of the book. With its representations of young women who have not typically been represented in history texts, this book will be inspiring reading for upper primary school trainees (ages 8 to 12) and invited by Michigan schools, book shops, and town libraries.
