The evocation of memory is dealt with psychological and historical significance in this unique holocaust memoir. With lyrical prose and impressive candor, Helena Ganor tells her story through a series of just recently penned letters to the substantial people in her life throughout her wartime girlhood: her sister, mom, dad, and stepmother. Both Ganor’s mom and sister died throughout the war. The author’s letters reveal much about living in pre-war Lvov, Poland. Her descriptions of relationships between regional Jews, Poles, Ukrainians, and Gypsies in Lvov provide a broad historical context to the Holocaust. Ganor combines deeply individual reminiscences of trying to endure as a secular Jew under Nazi profession with reflections on the diverse manner ins which people respond in the face of utter catastrophe. Stressing her letters with poems, Ganor’s story is an inspiring contribution to Holocaust literature.
