Wilhelm Roentgen, Professor of Physics in Wurzburg, Bavaria, discovered X-rays in 1895– unintentionally– while evaluating whether cathode rays could travel through glass. His cathode tube was covered in heavy black paper, so he was surprised when an incandescent thumbs-up nonetheless left and predicted onto a nearby fluorescent screen. Through experimentation, he discovered that the strange light would pass through the majority of compounds however leave shadows of strong items. Since he did not understand what the rays were, he called them ‘X,’ indicating ‘unknown,’ rays.
