The procedure of biomineralization, the structure of biominerals, and the resulting properties naturally depend on a hierarchy of scales from the molecular to the microscale. The very nature of biomineral development, occurring as it does at the interface in between natural and inorganic constituents, positions the science of biomineralization at the intersection between physiochemical processes and biological functions. As with most areas of science, much of the development in the state of understanding within this field is a result of advances in methods that consist of microscopy, spectroscopy, scattering, molecular biology, computational modeling, and polymer science.
